The family came to us with a lot, a builder and a folder of saved photos that did not quite agree with each other. We started where we always start: how do you cook, where does homework happen, and what does Sunday morning look like.

Because the construction drawings were drafted at our own desk, the interior decisions made it into the documents instead of onto a wish list. The kitchen window landed where the morning light is. The stair became a feature instead of a leftover. The millwork was priced from real drawings, not allowances.

The house was finished on one continuous palette: white oak, honed stone, black window frames and brass where your hand actually touches the house. Twenty years of projects have taught us that restraint photographs well and lives even better.
